First Friday Breakfast Club Scholarship

The GLRC of Cedar Rapids is pleased to announce scholarships available from gay and lesbian organizations in the state.

The First Friday Breakfast Club (FFBC) Scholarship is sponsored by a group of gay men who are dedicated to awarding scholarships to high school seniors who have participated in efforts to reduce homophobia and increase awareness and tolerance of gay and lesbian issues in their school or community.

This scholarship provides at least one award for up to three thousand dollars, with preference given to applicants attending a higher education institution in the state of Iowa. In the selection process, there are no restrictions or discriminations based on sex, race, religion, creed, marital status or gender orientation of the prospective recipient or his or her relatives.

The GLRC of Cedar Rapids has brochures available for both scholarships, which can be obtained at the GLRC during open house hours. You may also request that information to be sent to you by calling 319-366-2055 and leaving a message stating your interest in information on these scholarships. Leave your name and mailing address and we will get the information out to you via postal mail. Applications forms can be downloaded from the First Friday Breakfast Clubs website at: www.ffbciowa.org. The deadline for both scholarship programs is March 31, 2002. This information was furnished to the GLRC via the FFBC of Iowa.

Matthew Shepard Scholarship

The Matthew Shepard Scholarship is sponsored by Lambda Beta Nu, a lesbian breakfast club, by the First Friday Breakfast Club, and underwritten by a generous grant from Rick Eychaner Charitable Foundation. The scholarship is named in memory of Matthew Shepard, a Wyoming college student who was murdered in 1998 because he was gay.

Each year up to three Matthew Shepard scholarships are awarded to high school students attending any of the Iowa Board of Regents universities (Iowa State University, University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa). The scholarships cover tuition, books, and fees and are renewable for four full years based on academic progress and community service.

The Matthew Shepard Scholarship is awarded to openly gay and lesbian students who show good academic achievement and have a record of community service and/or involvement with the GLBT community. Financial need is also taken into consideration during the selection process. For these scholarships there are no restrictions or limitations in the selection process based on sex, race, religion, or creed, or marital status, or employment status of the prospective recipient or his or her relatives.
